How Many EV Chargers Does My Business Actually Need?

It might seem logical that ten electric vehicles require ten EV chargers. But commercial fleet charging does not always work that way.

The right number of chargers depends on how far your vehicles travel, when they return to your workplace or depot, how long they remain parked, how much energy they need before their next shift and how much electrical capacity your site has available.

So instead of starting with: “How many vehicles do we have?” A better question is: “How much energy does our fleet need, and how long do we have to deliver it?” That is the foundation of good EV fleet charging design.

This is another major consideration. Imagine a business has ten electric vehicles. If all ten return at 5 pm and must leave fully prepared at 6 am, the charging requirement is different from a fleet where:

  • another four return at 5 pm

For example, if a vehicle travels 100 kilometres per day, you would look at the manufacturer’s or real-world energy consumption data to estimate how many kilowatt-hours need to be returned to that vehicle.

Do this across the fleet and you begin to understand the site’s daily fleet charging requirement. The next question is: How many hours do you have available to deliver that energy?

A fleet requiring substantial energy over a twelve-hour overnight window will have a very different charging requirement from the same fleet needing that energy within two hours.

Business A: Trade Vehicles Returning Overnight

Ten trade vans leave each morning, return during the afternoon and remain at the depot overnight.   • charging duration
  • required energy
  • fleet management procedures.

Physically moving vehicles between chargers may work for a small fleet but become inefficient for a larger depot. That is why charger sharing should be considered as an operational decision, not simply a way to reduce installation cost.
