A fixed home EV charger will generally require a dedicated electrical circuit running from the switchboard to the charger. That means the EV charger does not simply share an existing general-purpose circuit with lights, appliances or other power points.

Why Does an EV Charger Need a Dedicated Circuit?

An EV charger can draw a substantial electrical load for several hours at a time. A dedicated circuit allows the electrician to select the appropriate: Cable size | Circuit protection | Isolation | Electrical capacity | Charger settings for the specific charger and property.

This is very different from adding another small appliance to an existing household circuit. The EV charger should be treated as part of the home’s electrical infrastructure.

Can You Install an EV Charger on an Existing Circuit?

A fixed wall charger should not simply be added to an existing general-purpose circuit. The charger needs to be assessed as a significant new electrical load.
