Is It Safe to Charge an EV From a Normal Power Point?

Yes, provided the power point, circuit and charging equipment are suitable and in good condition.

EV charging is different from plugging in many everyday appliances because the vehicle can draw electricity continuously for hours. That makes the condition of the outlet and circuit particularly important. An electrician should assess the setup if the power point is:

  • old or damaged
  • loose
  • showing heat or discolouration
  • on a heavily loaded circuit
