The important word is may. A switchboard upgrade should be based on an assessment of your property, not treated as an automatic addition to every EV charger quote.
Why does your switchboard matter when installing an EV charger?
Your switchboard distributes electricity throughout your home and contains the protective equipment for its electrical circuits. A fixed Level 2 EV charger is a significant electrical load that may operate continuously for several hours. It will generally require a dedicated circuit running from the switchboard to the charger location.
Before completing an electric car charger installation, an experienced electrician should assess:
- The age and condition of the switchboard
- The property’s available electrical capacity
- The rating of the main switch
- Existing household electrical loads

One of the most searched questions about EV charging is: How much does it cost to install an EV charger at home?
The answer can vary significantly because not every quote includes the same equipment, electrical work or site conditions. One quote may cover a simple installation beside a modern switchboard. Another may include a long cable run, difficult access, trenching, switchboard work and load-management equipment.
Factors that can affect the EV charger installation cost include:
- The charger brand and model
- Whether the charger is supplied by the customer or electrician
- A 7kW or 22kW charger

- What length of cabling is allowed for?

- Is load management included?
- Are testing and commissioning included?
- What could result in additional charges?

The cheapest headline price may not be the lowest final price if essential work has been excluded.
Do I need single-phase or three-phase power for an EV charger?
The answer depends on the charger, the vehicle and how quickly you need to charge.
7kW EV charger installation
A 7kW home EV charger will generally operate on single-phase power.
For many Sydney households, a 7kW charger provides enough charging capacity to replenish the vehicle overnight. It is often the practical choice for homes with an existing single-phase electrical supply.
However, having single-phase power does not automatically mean the property can accept an unrestricted 7kW charger. The home’s total load and available capacity must still be checked.
22kW EV charger installation
A 22kW EV charger generally requires three-phase power.
